Support for businesses impacted by Victorian lockdown

UPDATE: Wednesday 3 June, 2.00pm

Following the Victorian Government's announcement regarding the extension of the circuit breaker lockdown, additional support has been announced to provide assistance to those businesses most impacted.

While regional Victoria will see restrictions eased as of 11.59pm Thursday 3 June, those in Melbourne will continue to live by lockdown restrictions for an additional week. This will leave many Melbourne businesses struggling.

The Victorian Government has announced a further $209 million for the Circuit Breaker Support Package, providing grants to businesses most impacted by the lockdown. The additional funds will provide businesses who will be impacted for a second week with extra financial support. Applications for the circuit breaker package will now open on Thursday 3 June, ensuring impacted businesses will only have to apply once.

The current circuit breaker lockdown in Victoria didn’t come as a surprise as we started to see COVID-19 cases increase around the state.

"We are standing with Victorian businesses and workers – providing them with the support they need to get through this challenging time.”

Yet it still causes the same amount of heartbreak and despair for individuals and businesses impacted by the lockdown.

Victoria entered Stage 3 restrictions as of 11.59pm Thursday 29 May, meaning workplaces were forced back to working from home arrangements, events were cancelled and the hospitality industry restricted to take away service only.

With support packages such as JobKeeper no longer available, the Victorian Government’s announcement of the Circuit Breaker Business Support Package was vital for businesses impacted by the lockdown.

The $250 million  package is designed to provide support to businesses who are unable to operate due to the lockdown restrictions, with targeted support for the events industry.

The package includes:

  • $190 million second round of the Business Costs Assistance Program (further information below)

  • $40.7 million new round of the Licensed Hospitality Venue Fund

  • $20 million in targeted support for the events industry

The Business Costs Assistance Program provides eligible employing, and non-employing businesses with grants of $2,500. The grants are to provide businesses in sectors who have been most impacted by the COVID-19 lockdown periods, more specifically, businesses who cannot operate under the circuit breaker restrictions and cannot work remotely.

Applications for the Business Costs Assistance Program will open on Wednesday 2 June, 2021 and will remain open for three weeks. The below link provides more information and links to register.
