Temporary Relief for Businesses Impacted by Fuel Crisis

Treasurer Announces Temporary Relief for Businesses Impacted by Fuel Crisis

Australian businesses affected by ongoing fuel supply challenges have welcomed news of temporary relief measures announced by the Treasurer, aimed at easing immediate financial pressure and supporting continued operations.

In recognition of the significant disruption fuel supply issues have caused across key sectors, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) has confirmed it will provide temporary compliance relief for businesses struggling to meet their tax obligations as a direct result of the crisis. This relief is particularly targeted toward industries most heavily impacted by fuel shortages and rising costs, where cash flow pressures have been intensified.

Under the announced approach, the ATO will take a supportive and practical stance, limiting compliance action and offering greater flexibility to businesses experiencing genuine difficulty. This may include deferring certain tax lodgement and payment obligations and working with affected businesses to develop manageable payment arrangements.

The Treasurer has emphasised that these measures are designed to provide breathing space, not long‑term exemptions. Businesses are still encouraged to engage early with the ATO, maintain accurate records, and seek professional advice to ensure they remain compliant while taking advantage of the available support.

The ATO have also introduced a temporary fuel response payment plan to support eligible ABN holders impacted by high fuel costs. The measures include no upfront payment, flexible repayment terms of up to three years, and access to remission of general interest charges and penalties where conditions are met. Businesses affected by increased fuel-related operating costs are encouraged to assess their eligibility, ensure lodgements are up to date, and apply by 30 June 2026.

Strategem can assist with applications and help businesses navigate alternative support options where needed.
