The Bendigo Impact!

Bendigo Venues & Events presentation of Richard Wagner’s complete Ring Cycle Opera, from 24 March – 30 April 2023 at Ulumbarra Theatre, contributed $4.36M to the local economy with a $7.22M economic impact across Victoria. It attracted visitors from all Australian states, and 11 countries.

The project created unprecedented media coverage with a cumulative potential reach of 16.5 million people.

For 37 days Bendigo was immersed in The Ring Cycle: from historic walking tours, dinners, recitals, costume displays, mine tours, masterclasses, symposia and conversations; this was a cultural event unlike any other.

The 15-hour opera has only ever been performed 5 times in Australia. The Bendigo Ring Cycle was the first with an all-Australian cast, and the only presentation outside a capital city.

The presentation boosted community engagement and pride, and nurtured and inspired local talent.

Local opera lovers were thrilled to have such a rare and grand opera staged in Bendigo, negating the need to travel to a Capital City. Visitors were exposed to Greater Bendigo as a cultural destination and a thriving regional centre.

The Ring Cycle was an extraordinary venture for Bendigo Venues & Events. The wide-ranging positive impacts have transformed the cultural fabric of Bendigo, enriching the liveability of our region, fostering industry leadership, and showcasing the potential for future cultural development.
