Don’t Open Emails Before Your Coffee

Tax scam season is in full swing—and scammers are becoming more sophisticated by the day.

According to CPA Australia and recent data from the ATO, impersonation scams have increased by over 300% in the past year, with phishing attacks leading to losses of more than $13.7 million already in 2025. These scams are particularly dangerous first thing in the morning—when we’re not fully alert.

Why Mornings Are Prime Scam Time

Scammers often time their fake emails and SMS to land in your inbox overnight. That means when you wake up, scroll through your phone, and see a message from “the ATO” saying you’re due for a refund or facing a penalty, your early-morning brain might take the bait.

CPA Australia’s Tax Lead, Jenny Wong, says it best:

“These phishing scams are designed to catch you off-guard. That’s why you’ll often see them arrive first thing in the morning.”

What These Scam Messages Look Like

Some common fake email and SMS subject lines include:
✔ “Urgent new notification in your account inbox”
✔ “Your tax refund is ready”
✔ “Important update on your benefits”
✔ “Click now to avoid penalty”

They often prompt you to click a fake myGov link or share sensitive details. Don’t fall for it.

How to Spot a Scam

Here are a few key red flags to watch out for:

1. Suspicious links or QR codes

The ATO never includes hyperlinks in unsolicited SMS messages. If you receive one, it’s likely a scam.

2. Unusual email addresses or grammatical errors

Look out for strange sender names, spelling errors, or Americanised language (e.g., “organize” instead of “organise”).

3. Requests for personal or financial info

The ATO will never ask for passwords, bank details, or account numbers via email, SMS, or social media.

4. Invest Wisely for Long-Term Growth

Always look for official ATO verification (like a blue tick). The ATO won’t DM you for personal information.

What You Can Do

  1. Pause before responding—especially first thing in the morning.

  2. Verify any contact by calling the ATO directly on 1800 008 540.

  3. Report suspicious messages via the ATO’s scam reporting page.

  4. Educate others, especially family or team members, who might also be targeted.
